The Mayor of the Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District (MD) made a suggestion for a parking metre in Newbridge to be relocated in order to avoid cars being clamped.

Fine Gael councillor Peggy O'Dwyer made the comments at the latest MD meeting, which took place on Wednesday, June 18 last.

She motioned for Kildare County Council (KCC) to consider relocating the parking metre on Cutlery Road, which is beside the Whitewater Shopping Centre, further up from the private car park near Penneys, in order to "avoid customers using the incorrect metres and being clamped".

Mayor O'Dwyer actually previously raised the issue back in July of 2023.

Her motion was supported by her party colleague, Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer, who also suggested that APCOA, the company that manages the parking metre, could make the metre "more visible".

She added: "I don't think the onus should just be on KCC, they [APCOA] should be made aware too."

In response to Mayor O'Dwyer's motion, KCC said via the report it presented at the meeting: "The Transport Department will review the location to see if a move is warranted or whether appropriate signage would address any issues."

Mark McLoughlin, the senior executive officer for KCC's Transport, Mobility and Open Spaces department, also said that KCC will speak with APCOA about potentially reviewing signage in the car park.
