Overflowing sewage is "running onto the footpath" in one County Kildare region.

The revelation was made by Fianna Fáil Cllr Veralouise Behan at the latest Athy Municipal District (MD) meeting, which took place on Monday, January 19 last.

The topic arose when Cllr Behan submitted a motion to Kildare County Council (KCC), urging it address the wastewater issues in Kilmead sewage treatment plant.

Her motion was seconded by the Mayor of the MD, Fine Gael Cllr Ivan Keatley.

Speaking further on her motion, Cllr Behan stressed to KCC: "We need to keep paying attention to these things [referring to the water-related issues affecting the region]."

In addition, Cllr Behan told those in attendance that she was aware of overflow "running onto the footpath" in the region.

"Any progress on this would be greatly appreciated," Cllr Behan concluded.

Labour Party Cllr Aoife Breslin also voiced support for Cllr Behan's motion, and proposed that the MD members could organise a special meeting with Uisce Éireann in order to address the issues.

Mayor Keatley agreed with her, adding: "I would like to meet with them as soon as possible."

Responding to Cllr Behan's motion, KCC said via the report it presented at the meeting: "This matter has been referred to the dedicated Uisce Éireann email address: localrepsupport@water.ie."
