24 new residential units across two two-storey blocks

A €3.9 million residential development is underway at the former St John’s Convent site on New Street in Rathangan, Co Kildare.

The project involves the demolition of the existing convent and an external store and the construction of 24 new residential units across two two-storey blocks.

Block A will contain seven one-bedroom apartments and five two-bedroom apartments, while Block B will provide a further four one-bedroom and eight two-bedroom apartments.

The development will also include a 56.5 square metre community room, two bin stores, two bicycle stores and an ESB substation.

A total of 32 car parking spaces will be provided, including six visitor spaces and two designated spaces, with seven electric vehicle charging points. A minibus drop-off space is also included.

Cyclists will be catered for with 37 long-stay secure bicycle parking spaces and 12 short-stay spaces.

The plans provide for 985.6 square metres of public open space, representing 15% of the site, along with 1,838.5 square metres of communal open space.

Associated works include a new site entrance and access road, footpaths, boundary treatments, public lighting, drainage and utility services.

The publicly funded development is being delivered by Kildare County Council and Sophia Housing Association. Construction commenced on August 31, 2026, with the project having a floor area of approximately 1,714 square metres.
