New medical facility being planned for South Kildare

Cuan Mhuire is located Milltown, Athy, Co Kildare
A €1.8 million redevelopment and extension is planned for Cuan Mhuire’s addiction treatment facility at Milltown, Athy, Co Kildare.
The proposed works will modernise existing accommodation and provide additional residential facilities for people undergoing treatment, with the project currently at the planning application stage.
The scheme, submitted by Cuan Mhuire Teoranta, will involve alterations to the existing treatment unit, including the demolition of a glazed conservatory at the rear and an existing entrance lobby. Three greenhouses within the site will also be relocated to facilitate the development.
The existing building will undergo significant external improvements, including the installation of external insulation, new render finishes, hardwood timber cladding and alterations to selected windows.
A new single-storey entrance lobby, rear extension and covered walkway will also form part of the proposals. In addition, two single-storey, one-bedroom apartments are planned along the northern elevation.
A new two-storey building will be constructed to the rear of the existing treatment unit, connected by a glazed link. The ground floor will accommodate communal facilities, including a sitting room, dining room, kitchen, toilets, a plantroom and storage space. The upper accommodation provision will include seven ensuite double bedrooms and two ensuite single bedrooms for residents of the treatment unit.
The development will also include connections to the existing public sewer network and associated site works.
RDF Architects & Planning Ltd has been appointed as architect, with AOCA Engineering Consultants Ltd providing engineering consultancy services. Uisce Éireann is also listed among the project consultants.
With a proposed floor area of approximately 659 square metres on a 0.8-hectare site, the €1.8 million scheme represents an investment in upgrading Cuan Mhuire’s facilities and expanding its residential treatment accommodation, subject to planning approval.
