LATEST: Strike action by retained firefighters in County Kildare to remain postponed

A formal meeting with the Labour Court is due soon.

The retained firefighters strike action for County Kildare has been postponed.

Last week, the Leinster Leader reported that three different fire stations in Kildare closed on a rotating basis, as a result of strike action planned by Services Industrial Professional and Technical Union (SIPTU) retained firefighters.

The dispute concerns a staff crisis which threatens this community resource.

Now, a spokesperson has provided the Leader with the following statement: "The Labour Court has engaged with the union committee and the employers, and has now confirmed that it will use its Statutory powers to intervene in this dispute.

"In this regard, the parties will be attending a formal hearing of the Labour Court on Monday, June 26, at 10am."

The spokesperson added: "In order to give the Labour Court the time and space to work towards a solution, the negotiating committee have agreed to continue the suspension of strike action and to de-escalate the industrial action currently underway."
