Kildare judge says he could detain prison boss for contempt

The pair face a number of serious allegations following the alleged discovery of firearms and drugs, at Naas District Court
Naas District Court was told by Judge Desmond Zaidan that he detain a prison governor for contempt.
The judge criticised the decision to house the defendant in the same cell in the prison.
The pair face a number of serious allegations following the alleged discovery of firearms and drugs.
Given that one of the defendants has an apparent difference of opinion with the other about the circumstances of the allegations, Judge Desmond Zaidan said it was appalling that they should be accommodated together, adding it is “only a matter of time” before an incident takes place between them.
“What is the governor doing ? This shouldn’t be happening.”
The judge said the accommodation arrangements could result in the governor "winding up in the prison where he’s a governor.”
Judge Zaidan said the decision to house the men together was “shocking.”
He commented that it is apparent that there are other "more serious players, very big players, godfathers involved in this. “
“What is to say they will not intimidate each other," he said.
He also said the offences the man face are serious and they could potentially be facing life in prison.
Adjourning the case for a week, he directed that the pair be taken to different prisons.
He also said the men are still presumed innocent, the case against them has not been proven and what is before the court are allegations.
