REPUBLICAN Sinn Féin Cill Dara is planning to hold anti-drug protests in Celbridge and Newbridge to raise awareness of what it describes as the continuing threat posed by the growth of the drug trade and the number of its victims in the County Kildare.
The Celbridge protest will be held on the path near the Roman Catholic church on Main Street this Saturday and the party, which expects to have 15 to 20 members, present, will hand out leaflets.
Damien Dillon, chairman of the party's Frank Driver branch in north Kildare, said it will also hold a protest in the Rosconnell estate in Newbridge on Saturday, 7 February.
Mr. Dillon said they belive there is an upsurge in heroin usage in county Kildare.
The party also claims a drug dealer living in Celbridge is supplying drugs to fourteen and fifteen year olds in the area.
In Celbridge, it says it is aware of people who have had 'run in' with heroin dealers. In Newbridge, it believes that the Rosconnell estate has been hit hard by problems with the drug. Two children found a syringe on the estate last year.
The party, which will be putting up Des Dalton, a brother of Fianna Fail Cllr. Mark, up for election in Athy in the local elections in June, will be distributing leaflets in Rosconnell and will be inviting residents to join in the protest.
