Cllr Paula Mulroe (SD) raised road safety issues in Cooleragh, Kildare at a recent MD meeting

A traffic speed survey is to be carried out in the proximity of the church in Cooleragh, Kildare following the representations of a local councillor.

Cllr Paula Mulroe (SD) tabled her motion at a sitting of Clane-Maynooth Municipal District on Friday, November 6 2026.

Cllr Mulroe motioned: “That the council examines engineering solutions for traffic calming measures in the proximity of the Church in Cooleragh.”

Thanking the council for its report, Cllr Mulroe said for anyone familiar with the road in question, it was “quite a twisty road” and “quite wide.”

In recent years, she said, new housing estates have been built in the area, and people are now “struggling” to cross the road.

She said there was also nothing to alert motorists that they were approaching a built-up area, and no traffic calming present.

This was an example, she said, of a small rural community that's growing but which required some traffic calming measures to be put in place.

Cllr Padraig McEvoy (IND), supporting the motion, said that the speeds of motorists coming into Cooleragh were “extraordinary”, and referenced the “reckless behaviour” of some motorists.

He said he would support any measures to alleviate the problem in the area.

A report issued by the council stated: “The municipal district office will arrange for a traffic speed survey to be carried out at this location in the coming weeks.

“The results of this will assist with decision making in relation to appropriate traffic calming measures in line with Kildare County Council Traffic Calming Guidelines.”
