The cleaning measures will take place sometime next month

Power washing has been planned for the 'rundown' Main Street of one County Kildare town.

The matter was raised by a local councillor at the latest Celbridge-Leixlip Municipal District (MD) meeting, which took place on Friday, July 17 last.

During the early stages of this meeting, Fianna Fáil Cllr David Trost motioned for Kildare County Council (KCC) to power wash the Main Street paths in Celbridge.

According to Cllr Trost (who was also elected as the new Mayor of the MD earlier in the meeting), he wanted the cleaning measures carried out in order to improve the ‘overall appearance’ of the streetscape.

He also said that he wanted it to include the removal of weeds and chewing gum, in order to support businesses located on the Main Street.

Mayor Trost’s motion was seconded by Labour Party Cllr Rupert Heather.

In response to his motion, KCC asserted that the MD office would carry out the power washing of the footpaths on the Main Street in August.

Speaking further on the topic, Mayor Trost said that he welcomed the planned power washing, especially as the Main Street ‘looks quite rundown at the moment’.

His sentiments were echoed by Cllr Heather, who added: “We have been asking for this for the last few years.”

Another councillor, Fine Gael’s Declan Ryan, also expressed support for the power washing, but also stressed to KCC that he believed that it should ‘show a good example’ by avoiding carrying out the washing until after the hosepipe ban is lifted.
