Silt and a lack of water is damaging the Naas lakes

One of the lakes in Naas - prior to the weed growth

Weed growth at the Naas lakes is being promoted by the build up of silt and a lack of water.

A report on the problems in the amenity area was commissioned by Kildare County Council.

The report was made available near the end of August and it  recommends additional surveys to establish the source of the siltation in the lakes, as well as improvement measures such as  silt traps and programmes for additional maintenance.

A study of environmental dredging techniques may also be undertaken and the installation of silt traps can only be carried out once additional surveys and consultation happen.

Weed growth is being assisted by the reduced level in the water depth as a result of the silt build up.
