A set of traffic lights have been ruled out for a 'dangerous' crossroads in Leixlip, North Kildare.

Cllr Bernard Caldwell motioned at a recent MD meeting “that the council considers putting in place traffic lights at Galvin’s Cross on Station Road, Leixlip.”

Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Caldwell explained this is a “pretty busy junction”, and that he was asking for the installation of a set of traffic lights to ease traffic concerns in the area.

He said a lot of new houses had been built in the vicinity, including two new estates, and residents were finding it very difficult to leave their estates due to the lack of traffic lights.

Cllr Caldwell told the MD meeting that motorists were approaching Galvin's Cross “at speed”, and asked if it would be possible for the council “over the next couple of years” to put aside funding for traffic lights at the location.

However, Cllr Nuala Killeen (SD), also speaking at the meeting, said this junction became quite topical recently in relation to a planning application “that's out for further information at the moment.”

Therefore, she argued, a decision should be deferred on Cllr Caldwell's request until such time as further information on the planning application became available.

Cllr Caldwell, accepting the council's report, pointed out that the junction is “pretty dangerous” but stated he accepted what the council official had stated on the matter.

A report issued by the council stated: “There are currently no plans to provide traffic signals at this location. If a future Active Travel Project is being examined in the area the junction will be considered for upgrade works.”
