An appeal has been released for beehive locations in South Kildare.

The South Kildare Beekeepers Assocation (SBKA) is currently looking for new locations where beehives could be placed for the coming season.

According to SBKA, the ideal location would be between Newbridge, Naas and Kildare town, as that is the area that the group's beekeeper is based in.

The SBKA specified that a suitable site would:

  • Allow vehicle access close to the location
  • Possibly involve a short walk from where we park to where the hives are placed
  • Allow access roughly once a week from mid-spring through to mid-autumn

The SBKA also said: "Traditionally, the rent for hosting hives is one jar of honey per hive per year."

BENEFITS

Moreover, the SBKA outlined the benefits of having beehives nearby:

  • Improved pollination of gardens, orchards, and crops
  • Higher yields in fruit and vegetable plants
  • Support for the native Irish honey bee

"If you have a field corner, orchard, farm, or large garden that might be suitable, we would love to hear from you," the group added. "Let’s help the bees and the local environment together!"

Anyone looking to find contact details for the SBKA can do so by visiting its official Facebook page.
