A local councillor has called for the construction of a "safe, accessible and direct" walking route for one County Kildare region.
Fianna Fáil Cllr Donna Phelan made the call to Kildare County Council (KCC) at the latest Clane-Maynooth Municipal District meeting, which took place on Friday, February 6 last.
However, as Cllr Phelan was unable to attend the meeting for undisclosed reasons, her party colleague, Cllr Paul Ward, stood in for her.
On her behalf, Cllr Ward, who appeared at the meeting by virtual means, motioned for KCC to include the provision of a new pedestrian footpath linking Brookfield Park with the rear of College Green / Beaufield Estate in Maynooth in the 2026 Programme of Works.

According to Cllr Phelan's motion, the aim of this action would be to "provide a safe, accessible and direct walking route for residents, particularly children, older people and those with mobility difficulties".
The motion was seconded by Independent Cllr Pádraig McEvoy.
In response to Cllr Phelan's motion, KCC said via the report it presented at the meeting that the existing allocation for footpaths in 2026 would not allow this request to be advanced.
However, KCC also suggested that the members "may decide to allocate LPT [Local Property Tax] funding" towards this proposed project.
Cllr Ward told KCC that he accepted the report on Cllr Phelan's behalf.
