Undesirables are 'coming to house and driving in as if they own it', Kildare court told

A grandfather got his grandson barred from his home at Naas District Court.

The man told Judge Desmond Zaidan that he had previously been granted a barring order against the grandson but it had expired.

“He’s violent towards all family members,” he said, adding that the grandson had taken his mother’s car without permission and crashed the vehicle.

The man further alleged that the grandson was trying to get the keys of his wife’s car at 4am.

He also claimed the grandson has undesirables “coming to the house and driving in as if they own it.”

He added: “He’s a drug addict; it’s dreadful, it really is.”

The man said the grandson's father (his son-in-law) was in the child’s life in the early days “but it got intolerable and he had to draw a line under it.”

The man also told the judge that he had tried to get psychiatric help for him “but he won’t entertain it.”

He stated: “I’m anxious that he gets help. I’m not here to hammer him.”

Judge Zaidan commented that he is powerless to secure psychiatric assessment, unless the grandson appeared before him on a criminal allegation, in which case he could direct that he receive psychiatric assistance.

Judge Zaidan also said that the State only pays lip service to the damage caused by drug abuse and to the need to provide rehabilitation treatment for addicts who offend.

“The living hell among us is illicit drugs. We were taught to believe that there is heaven and hell but hell on earth is the effect of drug abuse. You don’t have to die to go to hell, just take illicit drugs and you will live it and those around you,” he said.

Judge Zaidan granted the man an interim barring order, which could be extended to three years at a subsequent hearing and he also granted a barring order to an uncle of the grandson, who was not present or represented.
