Newbridge councillor Peggy O’Dwyer said there is a general perception that cameras are attached to the lights.

She said an accident had occurred in Newbridge where a driver left the scene and some people assumed that the incident, which occurred at a traffic light, was recorded.

Cllr O’Dwyer asked for information about the function of the traffic lights.

KCC official Celina Barrett told the meeting there are no “live” cameras.

Ms Barrett said the pole mounted vehicle and pedestrian detectors used by the council are “radar based detectors using integral radar transceivers to detect vehicles and pedestrians.”

They do not have a camera or recorder.

Ms Barrett also said the use of the units is monitored by the local traffic signal controller and in turn by the fault management systems located at the traffic management centre in Aras

Chill Dara.
