There is opposition in Kildare to plans to reduce the size of apartments in future residential developments.

Some 14 councillors want Kildare County Council to writes to the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage to oppose the proposed changes to apartment standards, "which reduce local authority discretion and risk undermining the proper planning and sustainable development of housing."

The councillors also say that public confidence in local and national democracy will be eroded.

The group , which includes party members and independents want a meeting with the minister "to ensure that any future standards reflect a locally informed and community-led approach to housing delivery."
