Driver now faces charges of dangerous driving and a court appearance

A Kildare motorist driving on the M7 near Naas was recently detected by Naas Roads Policing Unit travelling at an extremely dangerous speed - almost 90 km/h above the designated speed limit.

While on patrol on the M7 recently, gardai detected the motorist travelling at a speed of 206 km/h – well above the motorway speed limit of 120 km/h.

The driver was arrested and charged with dangerous driving and will now appear in court.

Penalties for dangerous driving include:

Disqualification from driving up to 2 years;

A fine of up to €5,000;

A prison sentence, depending on circumstances, up to 6 months.

A statement from Naas Roads Policing Unit read: “Speeding at this level puts everyone on the road at risk. Drive safe. Arrive alive.

Separately, Naas Roads Policing Unit recently detected a motorist travelling at 162 km/h on the motorway.

The driver was arrested and charged with dangerous driving.

A spokesperson for Naas Roads Policing Unit said: “Travelling at 162 km/h—42 km/h over the limit—demonstrates a clear disregard for road safety.

“At such excessive speeds, the risk of serious collisions significantly increases, endangering not only the driver but all other road users.”
