Cllr Mark Leigh asked what powers are available to KCC to deal with the issue and was told at an Athy Municipal District committee meeting that warning notices are issued to the “occupiers of these structures” under the Local Government (Sanitary Services) Act, 1948.
The assistance of the council’s homeless and social work teams is offered to occupants (and) “in most cases, the occupants will engage and relevant supports are provided.”
If a caravan is not removed within the stated period, the case may be referred to the council’s solicitor for legal enforcement. “This will include the issue of a warning letter and court injunction action (will be) progressed.”
