Biodiversity Week will run until this Sunday, May 25, 2025

At first glance, you may think you are witnessing a scene akin to the 1954 giant monster flick 'Them!' or the harrowing 2007 film adaptation of author Stephen King's 'The Mist'.

However, fear not, dear reader: the insects seen here are in fact part of an art installation which aims to raise awareness about taking care of the environment.

The exhibits which form part of the "Litter Bugz" installation can be viewed outside of the headquarters of Kildare County Council (KCC), Áras Chill Dara, which is located in the Devoy Park region of Naas, County Kildare.

The installation forms part of Biodiversity Week 2025 and is supported by both KCC's Environmental Awareness Office and KCC's Biodiversity Office.

The colourful initiative follows after KCC on May 14 last released an open invitation calling on people to explore and enjoy nature and the wildlife of Kildare during Biodiversity Week, which will run until Sunday, May 25, 2025.

Speaking about Biodiversity Week 2025 on May 14, the Cathaoirleach of the County of Kildare, Fine Gael councillor Kevin Duffy, said: "It is important that we acknowledge and celebrate it and all it does for us; from providing the food that we eat, to the clothes on our backs, and protecting us from extreme weather events and mitigating against further climate change."

He added: "Biodiversity Week is a fantastic opportunity to embrace and celebrate Kildare’s nature, wildlife, and beautiful natural landscapes."

On another note, which also happens to be related to both insects and Biodiversity Week 2025, Kildare Wildlife Rescue recently announced that it would be hosting a bug hotel construction class, which will take place this Friday, May 23, 2025.
