The developer of one County Kildare housing development has been urged by a local councillor to speed up the provision of street lights in the region.

The call was made by Social Democrats Peter Melrose, who submitted a motion in relation to the matter at the latest Clane-Maynooth Municipal District meeting on Friday, May 2 last.

Cllr Melrose motioned for Kildare County Council (KCC) to "engage, up to and including written correspondence, with the developer of Oughterany Village in Kilcock to progress the provision of street lighting in the interest of health and safety".

His motion was seconded by Independent Cllr Pádraig McEvoy.

Cllr Melrose also told KCC that he would like to see the matter resolved "before we all go back to the shorter days [in Winter]".

Responding to Cllr Melrose's call, KCC acknowledged via a report that there has been "ongoing issues in relation to the provision of public lighting within the first phase of Oughterany Village in recent months".

KCC elaborated: "The developer has assured Development Control that their public lighting contractor has now been
engaged to investigate, identify and resolve the issues.

"Separately, they have submitted a connection application to ESB for the new lighting in Phase 2."

In addition, KCC asserted to the councillors present at the meeting that its Development Control section will write to the developer in order to "remind them of their obligations in relation to the provision of public lighting, in line with their granted planning permission and in the interest of health and safety".

One KCC official who was present at the meeting, Ann Marie Burke, also told Cllr Melrose that she hoped to provide him with an update soon.
