A local councillor has urged Kildare County Council (KCC) to develop a roundabout policy and action plan "as soon as possible".

Fianna Fáil Cllr Donna Phelan made the appeal at the latest Clane-Maynooth Municipal District (MD) meeting, which was held on Friday, May 2 last.

Cllr Phelan motioned for KCC to develop the policy and action plan in order to "cut back and tidy up the roundabout at Tesco in Maynooth, and [to] engage with Carton House, suggesting they maintain the roundabout on the Dunboyne Road ahead of the KPMG Ladies Irish Open which they are hosting this summer".

Her motion was seconded by her party colleague, Cllr Daragh Fitzpatrick (who is also the Cathaoirleach of the MD).

Responding to Cllr Phelan's motion, KCC said via its report that a clean up of the roundabout is being organised.

"The roundabout on the Dunboyne Road is already under maintenance," KCC added. "Any additional work to improve its appear prior to the Irish Open will be carried out in conjunction with work on the Tesco Roundabout."

Cllr Phelan in turn told KCC that she welcomed the report, but once again emphasised a need for a roundabout policy for the entire county of Kildare.

KCC's Senior Executive Officer, Transport, Mobility and Open Spaces, Mark McLoughlin, told Cllr Phelan that he would raise the matter further with KCC's Parks Department.

However, Mr McLoughlin also voiced his opinion that he was "not sure" if a policy is "the right way to go about things in this case".
