E scooter users in Kildare are 'behaving like joyriders'

Kildare County Council says it's up to the gardaí to act

Kildare County Council has no plans to put up  ‘No E-Scooters’ signs on footpaths and other areas used by pedestrians in Naas.

Independent councillor Seamie Moore told a Naas Municipal District committee meeting that some e scooter users is “a new form of joyriding” and pedestrians have been knocked down.

Cllr Moore said this happens especially when it’s dark and said the scooters “can’t be seen or heard.”

However, KCC said the use of these is covered by regulations 2024 and users are “required to obey the rules of the road and familiarise themselves with relevant traffic laws and regulations which includes a prohibition from using footpaths, pedestrianised areas or motorways.”

KCC also said improper or dangerous use of an e-scooter is a matter for An Garda Síochána.
