An animal welfare group based in County Kildare is seeking cans and bottles for recycling as part of a new initiative.

The "recycling challenge" was announced by the Kildare and West-Wicklow Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (KWWSPCA) on one of its official Facebook pages.

The KWWSPCA, which currently operates out of Athgarvan, explained: "The KWWSPCA is collecting drink cans and plastic bottles with the 're-turn' logo for recycling.

"The aim is to use the returns to help purchase veterinary cages for the new KWWSPCA Animal Shelter, which cost about €5,000 each."

The group added: "Please leave bottles and cans at the gate of the present shelter near Athgarvan, or if you would like us to pick up any you have collected, please text 'Bottles' to 089 458 8162 and a collection can be arranged. You can also bring them to any of the up coming events being organised by the KWWSPCA."

The KWWSPCA is a registered charity that seeks to promote the safety and health of animals in the Kildare and West-Wicklow region.
