New residential development proposed in Kildare to meet growing demand for homes

Kildare County Council has received a planning application for a new residential development in Castledermot.

Masonbrook Holdings Ltd submitted the application which proposes the construction of 45 mixed dwellings on a 1.24Ha site on Barrack Road near the centre of Castledermot town.

The development would comprise of 12 houses. There would be a mix of housing types, with two and three-storey homes included, as well as ones with three and four bedrooms, semi-detached, detached and terraced.

The plans also include 22 two and three bedroom apartments and duplex units divided between multiple three-storey buildings.

Vehicle access points off Barrack Road and all other associated site development works are listed in the proposal. Among these are details on landscaped open spaces to be constructed on the site. These spaces will serve as recreational areas for all ages living within the development.

The planning documents state that the variety and design of the units have been developed to meet the housing needs of the locality wherein there is an evident demand for homes for young families.

The plans also say that the "original town wall is envisaged as a significant focal point" within the development and would be the "key archaeological and landscape feature."

Given the planning sensitivities surrounding such archaeological structures, it will be interesting to see what Kildare County Council will decide. The decision is due by 10 April.
