The driver was arrested by Kildare Gardaí at the scene, where he failed a drugs test for cocaine, opiates and benzo's.

A motorist in Kildare who was driving under the influence of drugs had a close call after crashing their vehicle into a streetlamp between Prosperous and Clane over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Kildare Gardaí took to social media to share the story of the driver, who had a "lucky escape" after they "lost control and made short work of a street light".

According to Gardaí, the motorist  failed a roadside drugs test, testing positive for "cocaine, opiates and benzo's". They were arrested by Gardaí at the scene shortly after.

The driver now faces dangerous and drug driving charges, with a lengthy term of disqualification a hefty fine and a term of imprisonment of up to 6 months.

Photos from the incident showed the car had sustained extensive damage, and the airbags were deployed when the driver hit the streetlamp.

Thankfully there were no other injuries reported at the incident.
