Kildare man on scrambler bike fined for driving with no insurance

File photograph: The man also appeared on simple possession and obstruction charges.

A man aged in his late teens was fined for driving a scrambler bike without insurance.

Gardaí informed Judge Desmond Zaidan about the offence at Naas District Court on Thursday, March 7.

It was heard that the man was stopped by gardaí at a location in County Kildare while he was driving his bike.

When he was asked to show proof of licence or insurance, he was unable to provide gardaí with proof.

He also appeared on a simple possession and obstruction of drugs offence: gardaí approached the man, which prompted him to discard a container.

Upon looking inside the container, gardaí said that they found around €100 worth of cannabis.

The court was told that the man has no previous convictions.

Judge Zaidan asked the man: "Have you stopped taking cannabis?"

"Yes, sir."

"Are you sure?" the judge asked again, to which the man responded: "Yes."

The judge said that he would give the man a chance, but warned him against using cannabis.

He added: "You're only 19 years old, you have your whole adult life ahead of you."

Judge Zaidan enacted the Probation Act for the drugs and obstruction offences, and decided to fine the man €400 for driving with no insurance.

He also said that he took the no licence offence into consideration as part of his verdict.
