KILDARE: Council resists pressure to buy historic town centre castle

St David's Castle, Naas

Kildare County Council fighting shy of the prospect of buying St David’s Castle, the historic Naas town centre structure, which has been comprehensively renovated and is privately owned.

Green Party councillor Bob Quinn asked KCC to start a consultation process about the future use of the castle - should money become available to buy it in the future.

He said the prospect of the property being bought on behalf of the public should be grabbed with both hands.

Cllr Seamie Moore speculated that the property would cost €4m and “that’s a lot of money” for KCC.

He said if it was instead bought by the government and given to KCC “it could be another McAuley Place.”

However KCC official Eoghan Ryan pointed out that the building predates 1750 and many additions had been undertaken since then.

He said that while KCC is open to considering the idea of taking it over, he cautioned that an amount of work would be required to transform it for modern use.

According to KCC official Pamela Pender, the initiation of a public consultation process  for its potential use is not appropriate at this time - because it is privately owned.

A feasibility Study for the castle quarter and a conservation management plan and archaeological survey for the castle and grounds is being carried out by KCC heritage experts.

The outcomes of the studies and surveys will help to identify the future potential of this site.
