A man was so intoxicated that he fell asleep in the toilets of a Kildare petrol station.
That’s what Kildare gardaí told Judge Desmond Zaidan during a Naas District Court session, which was heard on Thursday, October 5 last.
Gardaí told the judge that the man, who was absent from the courtroom on the date in question, was 'falling around in the car park' of the petrol station, and eventually went into one of the toilets of the station, where he fell asleep.
The incident would be considered a public intoxication offence.
After being told the details of the offence, Judge Zaidan jokingly asked: "Was his head in the toilet bowl?", perhaps referencing an infamous scene from the dark comedy-drama film Trainspotting.
"The things some people do when they’re drunk," he added.
It was heard that the man had three previous convictions, all for road traffic offences.
The judge fined the man €350, and gave him three months to pay it.
A similar case was heard last month, in which gardaí found a man asleep outside a house with his pants down just outside a property in Kildare.
The man was drunk at the time and had fallen asleep while trying to go to the toilet.
