KILDARE: New bus/rail interchange for Maynooth

Labour election candidate welcomes progress on Maynooth Eastern Ring Road

Maynooth

A new  bus rail interchange is to be provided for Maynooth - but no timeline is available for the work.

A Clane-Maynooth Municipal District meeting was told that Kildare County Council will work the National Transport Authority and Irish Rail to provide it.

This will necessitate  the relocation of general parking at the train Station to a new station to be provided under the Dart+ plan. This plan will bring improved train services between north Kildare and Dublin.

New and proposed bus services which will use the interchange, will be agreed between KCC and the NTA.

This follows a call from Green Party politician Peter Hamilton, who said KCC should begin “proper planning for a bus terminal in Maynooth with adequate capacity to support both current and planned significant increases in volume and quality of public transport.”

Cllr Hamilton told the  meeting that even though “we’re all shifting to public transport” its provision is “abysmal.”

Cllr Angels Feeney said better links are needed between the train station and both the town and university.

KCC engineer Donal Hodgins told the meeting that one of the consequences of the project will be a reduction in the number of car parking spaces at the station.
