Kildare court: Man pinned his ex-partner to wall and threatened to break her neck

ALLEGED DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

A woman was pinned to a wall and was threatened by her ex-partner.

Naas District Court was told about the offence during an in-camera (in private) session on Thursday, February 23,

The court was told that the man had trespassed into his ex-partner’s home, which he was barred from, while intoxicated.

He also told his ex-partner, who is also the mother of his teenage son, that he would 'break her neck' and that he would 'come back (to the home),' adding: 'you’ll be sorry.'

Defending barrister Mark Gibbons told Judge Desmond Zaidan that his client was remorseful over what happened.

The judge said that he would read out a statement from the woman about how the assault had affected her.

She said that she had become paranoid about her safety following the incident, and had even taken a brief break from work as a result of the stress from the assault.

Judge Zaidan said that he read out the statement to him to show him the impact his actions had on her, and urged him to think of how the state of their relationship was affecting their son.

"Do you want him to grow up thinking that this is normal?” he asked the man.

In order 'not to compound the son’s trauma' by sending his father to prison, he instead imposed a peace bond on the man.

He also gave gardaí liberty to re-enter the case at short notice.

The man's defending solicitor, Seamus Boyle, said that he would let the woman know that his client was apologetic, as his client cannot be around her to do so himself.
