A Book of Condolence has been opened by Kildare County Council to allow members of the public pay tribute to the late musician Glen Hansard following his tragic death this week.

The book is available for signing at Áras Chill Dara, Devoy Park, Naas, during normal opening hours until Wednesday, August 12. Members of the public can also leave messages of sympathy online, with all tributes to be printed and presented to Hansard's family in a Book of Condolence.

Cathaoirleach of the County of Kildare, Cllr Tim Durkan, said he was "shocked and saddened" by the untimely passing of the Oscar-winning singer-songwriter.

"On behalf of Kildare County Council, I wish to extend my sincere condolences to his family, friends and fellow musicians on their tragic loss," he said.

The online Book of Condolence is available through the Kildare County Council website, where members of the public can submit messages of sympathy.

The council said every online message will be included in the commemorative book presented to Hansard's family.

The Book of Condolence, both in person and online, will remain open until 5pm on Wednesday, August 12.

Hansard, who died in a motorcycle crash in Dublin aged 56, was one of Ireland's most celebrated musicians, best known as frontman of The Frames and for his Academy Award-winning song Falling Slowly from the film Once.

Tributes have poured in from across Ireland and around the world following his death.
