Athgarvan school wins major road safety award

Scoil Bhride’s road safety campaign to complete a footpath from Athgarvan village to the school yielded results before Christmas.

Scoil Bhride’s road safety campaign to complete a footpath from Athgarvan village to the school yielded results before Christmas.

Not alone did the county council carry out the work but, the school also won a national Leading Lights award from the Road Safety Authority (RSA).

The school had nominated parent Carmel Murphy for her lead role in the campaign.

Principal Kate Gallagher praised Carmel for her determination along with members of the local community. Carmel and a group from the school were honoured at a special ceremony at Farmleigh House.

Ms Gallagher explained; “It’s wonderful to see the footpath extended. All we need now is to get the school crossing installed and we have been in touch with the council and the local politicians on that.”

She stressed more pupils were now walking to school, and the drop off and collection times were also much safer as a result.

A council spokesperson noted; “The Kildare area office completed footpath works at this location in December 2013.”
