PICTURES: "Let it rain" - Last day of Kildare Netflix filming featuring Emily Blunt and Andrew Scott

Today is the last day of filming in Rathangan of a major Netflix production starring Emily Blunt, Andrew Scott and Ciarán Hynes. 

The film is based on a short story by Claire Keegan called Walk the Blue Fields. It is being directed by The film is being directed by John Crowley of Brooklyn fame, and the script is by Conor McPherson.

The town has been transported back in time with old style shop fronts, old bikes, vintage vehicles, and an antique petrol pump. The signposts have been changed to reflect the fact that the story is set in Bunclody in times past. 

Yesterday (March 19), the film crew spend the afternoon shooting in Monasterevin before returning to Rathangan to film rain scenes. Filming began around 10pm with water being pumped from a tanker up through pipes into a special crane with a sprinkler head system to create rain. The main street was hosed down to leave puddles along the road. 

Emily Blunt has arrived each day, stepping out from a black car, always with a wave for the gathering crowd. On Wednesday evening, she took time out to chat to locals and posed for photos. Andrew Scott has maintained a more low key profile.

Many buildings have been given a bright lick of paint to represent a more traditional Irish main street. The former Hacketts supermarket has a whole new temporary facade to create the exterior of an old style cinema. The old butchers on Bridge Street has also benefited, with a new orange shop front as a betting shop with the title, Dolans stenciled over the front door. The “drapery side” of Ma’s Kitchen has also got a make over reminiscent of old Ireland, while the former bookies is now an undertakers. The small shop beside Hacketts is a Post Office. The beauticians in now a chemist and the clinic in the centre of the town is now Kelly's Pub.
