Newbridge side pull clear after slow start

A comprehensive win for Sarsfields in the end when they defeated Carbury by all of nine points in their opening game in this Joe Mallon Motors SFC at Manguard Park, Newbridge.

Playing into a stiff breeze, Sarsfields struggled early on, despite plenty of possession (5 wides and 3 short) but the Newbridge side soon moved into top gear.

Eoin Cully opened for Carbury while Barry Coffey replied, Barry Coffey then saw a long effort hop before going over for a two-pointer and the lead.

The hard-working Karl Hartley raised a white flag but again Eoin Cully replied to make it 0-5 to 0-3 after 20 minutes.

At this stage Sarsfields began to put their out-field dominance on to the score board, Ben McCormack, after hitting three shorts, finally got one over; Ryan Kearney raised an orange flag, Coffey added a free and while Eoin Cully got his fourth on the cusp of the break, Con Kavanagh and Shea Ryan combined for the latter to find the net and leave the score at the break Sarsfields 1-11 Carbury 0-4.

Sarsfields extended the lead on the resumption and while Aaron O’Neill replied with a palmed goal.

However there was no stopping the Newbridge side as they continued to dominate with Karl Hartley playing a blinder and with Daragh Hanlon, Cian Costigan, Conor O’Donovan and Matty Byrne (2) adding points there was no way back for Carbury despite an excellent effort from Eoin Cully.
