Entertaining game as Maynooth forced to come from behind in the final ten minutes
Maynooth were forced to dig deep but dig deep they did to overcome Carbury in Round 2 of the Joe Mallon SFC at Cedral St Conleth’s Park, this afternoon.
Maynooth dominated, especially early and on and on more than one occasion looked like they might pull well clear but in fairness, Carbury, were having none of that and as the half wore it got themselves into it.
The influential Matthew Diamond opened with a brilliant two-pointer for Maynooth inside a minute, Chris Canning added a point before Eoin Cully opened the Carbury account after five minutes.
Maynooth, however, were well on top and added three points to go five clear in 11 minutes.
Carbury came more into it, Aarond O’Neill capitalised on a ball off the upright to point, and Eoin Cully reduced the lead to three on 20 minutes.
Midfielder Matthew Diamond then hit a monster of a two-pointer free but Carbury hit back before the break with points from Cully (2) and Jack Smyth.
However before the break Maynooth fired over two points from Paddy Mahoney and Niall O’Sullivan to lead at the interval 0-10 to 0-6.
Tommy Gill came on for the second half and quickly fired over a two-pointer; Eoin Cully added a similar score (free) and the sides were level on 37 minutes.
Paddy Mahoney, very influential, hit a free for Maynooth but Maynooth came storming back when Cully cut in two defenders to find the net and when he added a free they were now three clear and looking good.
However that was Carbury’s final score of the game as Maynooth leveled with a Kevin Donovan goal and three points from the boot of Paddy O’Mahoney and the final score of the game from Kevin Donovan saw Maynooth dig it out, deservedly so, on a final score line of Maynooth 1-15 Carbury 1-11.
