The reduction was voted on at the last full Kildare County Council meeting back in June

A decision made by Kildare countycouncillors to reduce Local Property Tax funds for one Kildare Municipal District (MD) prompted criticism from a local councillor.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Brian Dooley, who is now the Deputy Mayor of the Athy MD, made the comments during the latest MD meeting on Monday, July 20 last.

During the early stages of this meeting, the MD’s new Mayor, Labour Party Cllr Mark Leigh, briefly highlighted that the MD would not have as much Local Property Tax funds as before, and expressed some uncertainty as to how the MD would approach matters with the reduced level of funds.

And at one point later on in the meeting, during a discussion on a separate councillor’s motion, Cllr Dooley made his views known on the reduced funds.

Summarising what happened, he explained that a vote took place at the last full Kildare County Council meeting back in June, and it was decided that the Local Property Tax funds that the Athy MD would be normally allocated would be reduced, as the MD has the lowest number of councillors in the county.

According to Cllr Dooley, who was critical of the decision, this means that the MD would be missing out on €217,000 worth of Local Property Tax per year.

Similar to Mayor Leigh, Cllr Dooley questioned how the MD would be able to function in certain areas given the reduced level of funds.
