'Urgent' traffic and road safety review called for this Kildare region

Cllr Donna Phelan (FF) will table her motion at an upcoming municipal district meeting
A Fianna Fáil councillor is calling for an “urgent” traffic and road safety review of the Moyglare Road Corridor, Maynooth, Co Kildare.
Cllr Donna Phelan will table her motion at the upcoming Clane Maynooth Municipal District meeting, held on Friday June 5 2026.
In her motion, Cllr Phelan explains it is “in light of the increasing traffic congestion and safety concerns arising from the three schools campus, Maynooth University and surrounding residential developments.”
Cllr Phelan calls on the council to bring forward “immediate and long-term measures” to improve road safety, traffic flow and active travel infrastructure along the route.
Seperately, Cllr Phelan also asks that the council carry out “urgent” maintenance and safety upgrades to the two pedestrian crossings serving the Maynooth Education Campus on the Moyglare Road, Maynooth.
This should include, Cllr Phelan states, the repainting of zebra crossings and the activation and repair of the flashing beacon lights at both crossings, “in the interest of pedestrian and student safety.”
Meanwhile, in a meeting dominated by transport issues, a motion from Cllr Angela Feeney (LAB) asks that the council write to both the National Transport Authority (NTA) and Health Service Executive (HSE) requesting that the 139 bus route be extended to Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown.
Cllr William Durkan (FG) calls on the council to inspect the road surface adjacent to the R148, outside of BBC United soccer grounds, Moyvalley, “with a view to making significant improvements.”
Echoing motions tabled by Cllr Donna Phelan (FF), Cllr Peter Melrose (SD) asks that the council review the junction of Moyglare Hall/Moyglare Road, Maynooth “and considers appropriate traffic measures in the interest of pedestrian and cyclist safety.”
Cllr Melrose's party colleague, Cllr Paula Mulroe calls on the council to examine opportunities to work with relevant stakeholders to provide a turning circle for buses at Downings (Caragh GAA), Prosperous.
Fine Gael councillor, Tim Durkan asks the local authority to repaint the disabled parking bays at Lady Chapel Church, Maynooth, which he states “are in poor repair”, while Cllr Paul Ward (FG) calls on the council to implement “appropriate traffic calming measures” on the link road connecting Royal Meadows Estate and Chambers Park Estate, Kilcock.
This, states Cllr Ward, is in the interest of road safety and the potential danger posed to residents, pedestrians, cyclists and children using the area.
Finally, Cllr Pádraig McEvoy (IND) calls on the council to undertake a traffic survey on the L10231 through Moat Commons, Clane, “in response to concerns raised by local residents”, with particular attention to heavy goods vehicles.
