Nurney and Straffan set for Intermediate Championship replay after successful appeal

Nurney and Straffan will replay their 2024 The Auld Shebeen Athy Intermediate Football Championship Preliminary Round fixture after Nurney GAA successfully appealed the result of their controversial first encounter. The replay has been set for Tuesday August 20 on Manguard Park Pitch 1 at 7:30pm.

The appeal was won by Nurney GAA following a CCCC meeting in Hawkfield on Monday night and a subsequent committee review of video evidence provided by Straffan.

Straffan ran out 0-14 to 1-10 winners last Friday night according to the referee's notebook, but it was widely believed that the match official had made a mistake in his calculation of Straffan's score. Part of the confusion on the night arose from the referee's adding of a point on the scoreboard to Straffan in the final 10 minutes with no clear origin of the extra point.

After the game, discussion surrounded the awarding of what was called Straffan's 11th point, a high looping effort and one that reporters had marked to John Tracey and as Straffan's 10th point. It is unclear still whether this point was the source of the referee's error, but it did indicate a discrepancy somewhere in the match official's scorekeeping.
