The other side of it last week, to win by a point, this time we are on the wrong side of it so as great as it was last week it's probably more disappointing this week.
The words of Kildare manager Glenn Ryan, pictured, following Kildare's one point defeat at the hands of Monaghan with a point in the 75 minute of the pre-quarter final clash in Tullamore.
The manager added that he felt “our defenders were brilliant today, the scores they (Monaghan) took were excellent scores to break us down.”
Ryan added that “we did feel the goal when it came, when you are playing with the wind you want to try stop the opposition from getting a goal and unfortunately they got one early and we probably needed to get one; we created the chances; did very well to create the chances.”
Referee
When asked for his thoughts on the referee the Towers man, paused as if being very careful and measured in his response before saying “our job is to try and prepare the team and get them out on the pitch for lads to try and do the best that they can; I suppose it is other people jobs to make sure they get decisions right as to who officiates those games ... somebody said to me during the week that this man (referee) is out of his depth and he proved tonight he was out of his depth and I can't understand that why, in a big game like that you have a top class official like David Gough doing the line; he was equally scratching his head, like me, on the sideline on occasions but we had opportunities to win the game and we just didn't take them but our lads battled and worked manfully and that's all you ask of them.”
The manager admitted that the loss of Ben McCormack was a big loss, “he was going really well and was a big loss for us and the second half would have suited him even more the way the game was going to open up but that's part of the game; injuries are part of the game and you have to try and manage them as best you can when they come about.”
The manager added that “we went three points up and seemed to be in control of the game but then we lost that and could not get it back but really on reflection we did not have enough in the bank at half-time when playing with the wind.”
The Season
Looking back briefly on the entire season Glenn said “no doubt about it, this has been a disappointing year and disappointing from the point of view that I don't think we have been able to create a consistency of performance that reflects the ability of the players; we were hoping that maybe with a win or two in this Series would have given us that sense that we were better players and I think we have shown that.”
Glenn added that he felt “we had the winning of that game tonight and at the end of the day it would have been great to be looking forward to the draw on Monday and see who we would have got but that's not us, it is Monaghan and fair play to them.”
