Republic of Ireland wing back Matt Doherty has signed for Atlético Madrid in a surprise deadline day move following Tottenham Hotspur's termination of his contract.

A statement, released by Spurs tonight, read: "We have mutually agreed to the termination of Matt Doherty’s contract to enable him to join another club.
"Signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers in August, 2020, the Republic of Ireland international made 71 appearances for us in all competitions, scoring three goals.
"We should like to thank Matt for his service and wish him well for the future."

The 31-year-old had been in and out of Antonio Conte's side this season with Spurs set to replace Doherty with Sporting CP right back Pedro Porro.
Atlético Madrid are currently fourth on the La Liga table.
