CCTV is to be rolled out to tackle dumping in Kildare locations

Kildare County Council says fines are being imposed on offenders
CCTV systems are to be rolled out to tackle illegal dumping at a number of locations - Kildare town, Newbridge, Clane and Maynooth - by Kildare County Council.
This follows the successful use of the technology in Athy, which resulted in a number of people being fined.
At a Naas Municipal District committee meeting, Cllr Fintan Brett called illegal dumping a “scourge” and Cllr Carmel Kelly called for KCC to provide mobile cameras which can be taken to different locations.
Cllr Brett said a “funding stream” should be set up in the Naas area “to provide multiple CCTV systems for use at dumping blackspots.”
According to KCC no dedicated funding stream is available.
But a request was made to each municipal district at the beginning of the year for property tax money to be used and “CCTV systems are being prioritised for the districts with funding approval.”
CCTV schemes may also be paid for from the Anti-Dumping Initiative through the Circular Economy Fund, when applications reopen in 2027.
KCC also pointed out that any future deployment of CCTV “will be subject to the completion of the required statutory processes (including the national guidelines and code of practice relating to the prevention, detection and prosecution of waste and litter offences using CCTV).
It will be considered on a site-by-site basis, taking into account having regard to proportionality, effectiveness and cost.
