The River Liffey is being destroyed by pollution.

That’s the claim of local councillor Evie Sammon who claimed the river is being contaminated with sludge.

Cllrl Sammon said the amenity is used by swimmers and kayakers and she was told that Kildare County Council has received correspondence - and she asked if any had been received from Uisce Eireann or Dublin City Council, which operates a water treatment in Ballymore Eustace.

Cllr Sammon also said that dead fish had been floating to the surface.

Cllr Sammon alleged that UE and DCC are not in compliance with planning files.

According to Kildare County Council,  the Environmental Protection Agency as well as DCC and UE are working with KCC.

KCC also said that  DCC is in compliance with planning conditions  “but there are other issues.”

KCC also acknowledged that members of the public have been in contact with it about the river.
