Tributes have poured in following the unexpected passing of an Irish jockey and father of three Michael J. (Mikey) O'Connor.

According to a report by The Irish Times, Michael at the age of 44, "reportedly fell ill while working at his yard in Co Cork".

Michael was from County Cork and died unexpectedly but peacefully at Knockbarry, Liscarroll on Thursday, September 4th, 2025.

He was the loving husband of Margaret (Mags) and much loved father of Dylan, Sophie and Rachel.

Loving son of Noreen and the late Bob, twin brother of Elaine (Palmer), brother-in-law Alan.

Dear uncle of Katie and Aaron, uncles Jack and the late Pat, Mike, and P.J., aunt Chrissie, cousins, neighbours and a large circle of friends.

The family wish to thank the 'First Responders', Ambulance service, Air ambulance, the Fire service and every person that helped on the day.

Horse Racing Ireland commented: "We are deeply saddened to hear that Mikey O'Connor has passed away. We send our condolences to his family, friends and racing colleagues."

"Mikey was one of Ireland's leading point-to-point riders riding over 400 winners and won three Southern titles. May he rest in peace."

Heartfelt messages have been left on RIP.ie, from those who knew and loved Michael, with one mourner writing,

"We are all in mourning after hearing that Mikey passed away so suddenly. He's passion for point to pointing and good humour will be truly missed by all of the racing people. May he rest in peace forever".

Another message said, "Deepest sympathy to the O' Connor family. Often told me best horse he had ridden was For Bill for my late father Donie. He was such a wonderful jockey and such an unassuming person. Will be greatly missed. Rest in peace".

"Sincere sympathy to Mags and the children on Mikeys sudden passing. A larger than life character his place on the P2P circuit will be sadly missing this season. May he rest in peace, will remember him and you all in my prayers," another person said.
