Met Eireann pinpoints when temperatures will plummet after scorching heatwave

The weather in Ireland has quickly changed following a weekend long heatwave that saw temperatures climb to as high as 30 degrees with heat warnings put in place for many counties.

Temperatures have dropped slightly bringing cooler weather as temperatures are expected to drop to as low as 8 degrees as the week continues. 

In a new weather updated Met Eireann said: "cooler and fresher than recent days with sunny spells and heavy showers but generally dry early on across Ulster and Leinster.

The weather will be mixed and changeable overall through the coming week with cooler and fresher weather than recently and turning a little milder around mid-week, with lows of 8 to 13 degrees on Tuesday night.

"Later this afternoon, on July 14, cloud will further increase across the West and Southwest with showers merging to longer spells of rain in these parts, along with embedded thunderstorms this evening. Highest temperatures of 15 to 21 degrees with freshening southwest winds, gusty around downpours."

During the night we will see showers or longer spells of rain, turning heavy and possibly thundery at times. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 13 degrees with light to moderate variable winds over much of the country, but fresh to strong south to southwest winds in the south.

On Tuesday July 15, the weather will be mostly cloudy with spells of rain, possibly heavy and thundery at first tomorrow but it will brighten up from the west through the morning with a mix of sunny spells and showers, with mainly dry conditions developing in the west for the afternoon and extending eastwards in the evening.

Highest temperatures of 16 to 20 degrees with moderate to fresh northwest winds developing, strong at first near southern coasts.

Overview: Mixed and changeable overall through the coming week. Cooler and fresher than recently, but turning a little milder around mid-week.

Tuesday night: Mainly dry with clear spells but thickening cloud in the southwest will bring outbreaks of rain near the southwest coast by morning. Areas of mist and fog will form also, as winds fall light and variable. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 13 degrees.

On Wednesday July 16: There will be some hazy sunshine but then cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle in the southwest will gradually extend northeastwards over the country through the day. Highest temperatures of 17 to 21 degrees with light to moderate south to southeast winds.

Cloudy with outbreaks of rain on Wednesday night, turning heavy at times. Mild with temperatures not falling below 13 to 17 degrees, in light to moderate southerly winds.

Thursday: Mostly cloudy with outbreaks for rain breaking up into showers and sunny spells during the afternoon and evening. Some of the showers will be heavy with a chance of isolated thunderstorms. Highest temperatures of 18 to 23 degrees with light to moderate south to southwest winds.

Friday: Current indications suggest variable cloud amounts with some sunshine and scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 17 to 21 degrees in light southwest or variable breezes.

Next Weekend: Unsettled overall with low pressure dominating bringing showers or longer spells of rain at times. Temperatures around average.
