Tributes have poured in following the tragic death of a young teenage boy who's body was recovered from the River Nanny in Laytown in Meath on Friday last.

Louth Live has reported that Taoiseach Micheál Martin paid tribute to 15-year-old Dundalk teen Kofi Owusu.

During an exchange at Taoiseach’s questions, Dundalk TD Ruairí Ó Murchú said he wanted to pay tribute to the student, "Our condolences go out to his family and friends and to the wider community. We have all heard the tributes from Redeemer Celtic and in particular from Tomas Sharkey from Coláiste Chú Chulainn, the school he attended.

"We have heard of Kofi’s diligence, his leadership qualities and his friendship. A huge hole has been left. He was a spectacular footballer and basketballer. He was an all-round really, really good kid.

"This happened just a couple of days after the death of Izzy McCloskey and it highlights the dangers of the water and while we hope for a really good summer, it highlights the necessity that we have to ensure that everything that can be done is done in relation to information about the dangers of water because we have had too many tragedies across Ireland."

Kofi will be so missed by his heartbroken parents Tony and Maria, sisters Faith and Esther, the extended family, his friends including the students of Coláiste Chú Chulainn and his teammates in Redeemer Celtic, and the congregation at The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Miracle Land, Castletown Road, Dundalk.

"Our deepest condoldences to Tony, Maria, Faith and Esther on the tragic loss of your son and brother. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. We were neighbours in Limerick and remember fondly the children playing with their pals and the sheer youthful joy they brought. Kofi was a credit to you. May your many memories be a blessing. Rest in Peace Kofi".

Another message said, "Rest in paradise Kofi. Kofi always knew how to lift up someones mood, he was one of the most kindest and gracious friend one could have. He always brought a smile and laugh out of everyone, he had such a bright future ahead of him, my condolences to his family. RIP".

"Kofi, there isn’t a street in Dundalk that didn’t know you. Anyone who has mentioned your name in these last few days have all said the same thing about you, “a lovely chap” Dundalk is numb over your sudden passing. To Kofi’s parents & sisters, we send our deepest sympathies to you, know that you’re in everyone’s thoughts & prayers at this most difficult time. To Kofi’s friends, this huge wide circle of friends. Know that you’re all in our thoughts, such a tragic loss must be absolutely heartbreaking for you all, stay strong & be there for each other. Just like Kofi would’ve been there for all of you. Sleep well Kofi," another tribute read.
