Gardaí are currently assessing the contents and credibility of an email communication that was sent overnight
A security threat has led to the sudden closure of multiple schools in Clare, with gardai investigating the credibility of the danger posed.
An email was sent at 2am to a number of schools in Clare purportedly from a man who identifies himself and gives his address in county Clare.
In the email there is a mention of firearms.
When contacted, one school Sixmilebridge NS confirmed it is closed today. Parents of Knockanean NS in Ennis received a text message this morning to say: “Due to exceptional circumstances the school will remain closed today.”
It is understood schools in the Shannon, Ennis and Sixmilebridge areas are impacted by the security alert.

Gardai say say they are aware of a communication that has been sent to a number of educational establishments in county Clare thus Tuesday, February 11.
"Gardaí are currently assessing the contents and credibility of that communication.
"Gardaí are engaging with the affected educational establishment with regard to this ongoing incident. Any senior management of these establishments with concerns are advised to make contact with Ennis garda station.
"No further information is available at this time," said a garda spokesperson.
