A driver has received penalty points and a fine for speeding while driving on damaged tyres.

According to An Garda Síochána, Naas officers seized the car after it was spotted speeding at 75km/h in a 50km/h zone with unsafe tyres.

Gardaí posted about the incident on their official social media channels, prompting a response from the public.

One X user commented, "Somebody was driving at 75km/h on these [tyres]?! Good jesus."

Another described the seizure as "fantastic news", while another commented, "People don't care, putting lives at risk."

Gardaí also recently stopped a car driven by an unaccompanied driver with no insurance.

They driver received fines and penalty points, and the car was seized.

Meanwhile, Gardaí in Wicklow South West stopped an unaccompanied learner as part of National Day of Action on Tuesday (July 2) with assistance from RSA Ireland.

This car's tyres and brake discs were noted to be in "poor condition", and the driver had no valid tax or insurance.

It comes amid a number of road crashes nationwide, the latest of which involved the death of a mother and her eight year old daughter - named locally as Aisling Moore and Abbigael Moore-Tournié - in Foxford, Co Mayo on July 2.

Three people were rushed to hospital yesterday (July 3) after a two-car collision in Castlepollard, Co Westmeath, with one man aged in his 80s dying at the scene.

A single-vehicle collision - which also occurred in Castlepollard - on July 2 led to the death of a man aged in his 50s.
