Man arrested over Kerry assault that left young dad dead on street released

A second man arrested in relation to an assault that left a young dad dead in Kerry has been released without charge, gardaí have said this morning.

"The man (aged in his 20s) who was arrested on Monday, 27th May 2024, as part of the investigation into the fatal assault of a man in Knockanure, County Kerry, has been released without charge. A file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions," a statement read.

A second man in his 30s, from Limerick, was yesterday charged in relation to the fatal assault in Knockanure, Co Kerry in the early hours of Monday morning.

The accused was due to appear at a special sitting of Listowel District Court on Tuesday evening, May 28.

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted at approximately 12.30am on Monday regarding an alleged assault in the Knockanure village area, said a garda spokesperson.

"Upon arrival, a man aged in his 40s was discovered with fatal injuries. He was pronounced deceased at the scene and his body has been removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Kerry for postmortem," said the garda spokesperson.

The deceased has been named locally as Gerard Kennelly, aged in his 40s.
