An Irish animal rescue is warning people against forcing their dogs into Halloween costumes.
PAWS - which has rescued, vaccinated, neutered and rehomed thousands of Irish dogs since 1997 - has advised against the practice, which they state can be "downright terrifying" for pets.
According to the charity, costumes can restrict a dog's natural movement and create "a truly scary experience", especially if there are trailing loose parts they can't escape from.
They suggest trying a festive bandana or bow on their collar instead.
However, a post on their webpage states: "If they are the type of dog that does not mind costumes, be sure they are fitted correctly and there are no dangly parts or restrictive parts that could get caught or cause injury to your pet."
They are also reminding pet owners to keep an eye out for animals in need at this time of year, as many are found lost or straying at Halloween.
Owners are also advised to keep dogs away from open front doors and trick or treaters, and to ensure their ID tag and microchip details are all up to date.
If you see an animal in discomfort, ring An Garda Siochana or the ISPCA cruelty helpline at 1890 515515.
