Residents of County Kildare town 'not rummaging through bins for cans or plastic bottles'

Council blocks €11m plan for 44 new homes near Naas town centre

There are no plans to trial recycling trays in bins in the Naas area.

Container trays have been fitted to litter bins elsewhere so that people can place bottles and  cans that they don't intend to return themselves.

This is done to stop people from going through the bins for recyclable items which are due a refund.

Cllr Carmel Kelly asked if this is being considered for the Naas area.

According to KCC official Ken Kavanagh, the practice of rummaging through public bins for returnable containers “has not been a major concern” in the Naas area - so no trial is planned.

The Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) has been very successful since its introduction in February 2024 with Re-turn, the operator of Ireland’s DRS, announcing at the end of October that over 600 million plastic bottles and cans have been returned since its launch.
